I need a device that will allow me to play electric guitar and get all
the effects possible with an amp-speaker or most of them, but silently
since I have to practice silently sometimes.

The jack should plug directly into and electric guitar.

I am not very technically inclined but I think just plugging the mic
in would miss a lot of the possible effects.

Does anyone know their way around this topic?

You're looking for something like one of these -

http://line6.com/products/pod/

Use headphones with it. The bean=shaped ones are small and will fit in
a suitcase/briefcase and are convenient for traveling. The floor ones
are good if you want to use your feet to stomp effects on/off. Any of
them will also allow you to record with a computer using USB.

I have the POD X3 Live - it will do not process guitar, but also bass
and vocals. It's a bit big, but it suits my practice/scratch recording
needs.
