OK... What's going on in the guitar track on this tune? (the strange
arpeggiated synth-like guitar that runs through most of the song) Is it an
E-Bow? Octaver? Ring mod? Filter? Slow gear? VG-88? All of the above?
Whatever it is, it's totally bitchen. Kudos to Mayer, his producer, and his
guitar player, whoever it is. Any clues as to how they got that sound?

Nope. It's either an Exotic Effects Robotalk or a Z Vex Ooh Wah. The
Robotalk is a random envelope filter (just got myself one). It's awesome.
The Z Vex also has a random switch on it. They sound a little different from
each other and are special in their own ways.

he was just on letterman, and he had a keyboard player with him, and mayer and
his second guitarist were doubling each other, so that leads me to believe that
it was the guy on keyboards.

That still doesn't mean the keyboard player was doing the part. Maybe
you're right. I don't know for sure because I didn't see the show,
but....The way the effect works is that you can play rythm (chords) and it
chops it up. I know that's not a really good explanation. There is a knob
for tempo and as you turn it it speeds up the random filter. Kind of like a
tremelo but with a filter. He could very well be playing the same chords but
with the envelope effect on. The recording sure does sound like a guitar
with some kind of envelope filter. Go to www.musictoys.com and look up
Robotalk and listen to the sample. You'll see what I mean.

The keyboard player could very well be performing said part live, while it was
recorded by a guitarist in the studio. It does indeed sound like a Robotalk or
OohWah.

Ha! No ZVex, no Robot Talk, no sissy keyboard player, it's a Roger Linn
Adrenalinn:

Heard it on NPR & it was definately an Adrenalinn - sounded like a factory
patch.

Supergroovy.

It's a drum box, amp modeler, modulation sequencer. Synchs to MIDI clock
or internal tempo.
Tremolo pan to the beat, beat synched delays, flange, envelope filter, Etc.
has presets + user patch storage for drumbeats, modulation settings, and
filter sequences.

Built like a stomp box, wants to sit on a desk. Output can go into an amp,
prefers a board.

Amps sims sound good, modulation effects are outstanding, drumbox is hip.
Neat little box.

I don't doubt you on this. I'm sure you're right. The list on the web site
is a little suspicious though. I mean they ask for someone to submit the
name of a song they hear it on and they will post it....With no follow up?
What if it's another box that's making that sound? Hmm....For instance I
know that John from the Chili Peppers has an ooh wah, how do we know he
wasn't using that?
